Little Traverse Wheelway

This 26 mile cycle and pedestrian pathway connects the resort communities of Harbor Springs, Petoskey, Bay Harbor and Charlevoix in Northern Michigan. It has become a recreational resource for area residents and visitors, allowing them to safely move between towns using muscle power alone. The views of Little Traverse Bay are stunning, and are best experienced while on a bike, rollerblades or on foot.

Because this pathway traverses several urban centers, it’s important for riders to know what’s coming. Curb cuts and driveways create potential conflicts between trail users and vehicles. To remedy this, Corbin Design developed a comprehensive standard for all signage: distance markers, trail heads and trailblazers.

  • Users should be prepared for any eventuality; in the case of an emergency, the signage helps pinpoint location for emergency responders.
  • Colors of the program are designed to merge with the environment, providing information that is apparent when people need it, and transparent when they don’t.
  • Map and message heights are designed for visibility and accessibility whether trail users are using a wheelchair, a bicycle or on foot.
  • Designed to withstand both vandalism and the elements, this program will direct, orient and inform trail visitors well into the future.
  • The signage elements unify information at specific decision points. Tall vertical totems become landmarks visible from a distance, and form a pattern of elements that provide wayfinding information while branding the entire pathway.
  • Corbin Design developed a sign type array and master plan. As budget monies become available, our clients are working with local fabricators to implement a phased program.

Working together with our clients, we created a branded link to promote cross town tourism, and encourage economic activity by connecting active users to multiple downtowns. This trail system also creates a unique and marketable visitor amenity, further differentiating this region from other northern destinations.
