The City of McKinney

Located in the northeastern corner of the competitive Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex, McKinney, Texas, distinguishes itself through upscale shopping and dining, a vibrant Historic Downtown, and easy access to nature. Known for being “Unique by Nature,” McKinney is one of the fastest-growing cities in the country—an evolution that inspired the development of a new wayfinding system.

In partnership with engineering firm Kimley-Horn, the consultant team collaborated with city staff, business owners, residents, and elected officials to create a system that formally identifies two primary wayfinding districts—Historic Downtown and the 121 District—while guiding visitors and residents to key destinations across the city.

The system’s design features custom cut-out artwork inspired by native Texas plants, each rendered in vibrant colors and placed throughout the city to create a bright, engaging experience. Hidden within the artwork are playful elements—a bird, a squirrel, or a dragonfly—encouraging a city-wide scavenger hunt for all ages.

“This project is all about making life a little easier for our residents and more welcoming for our visitors. Whether someone is trying to find the downtown square, City Hall, a park, or a library, these signs will help get them there clearly, quickly, and with a sense of place that’s uniquely McKinney.”
