University Health Network, a global leader in health care, hired Corbin to improve wayfinding at its Toronto General and Toronto Western hospitals. UHN needed updated exterior and interior signage to reflect a recent identity change and to better direct patients and visitors through its facilities. Signage was also needed for massive expansions at both hospitals. Corbin’s work covered a range of projects, from wayfinding master planning to developing retail sign displays for 12 stores and restaurants at Toronto Western, designing donor signage for use in UHN’s philanthropic program and drafting brochures that explain the new wayfinding system to staff at both hospitals. The custom aluminum exterior signs have a brushed satin finish and use reflective vinyl for graphics and messaging. Many use a water-jet-cut aluminum UHN logo painted gold to reinforce the UHN brand. Buildings and departments use wall-mounted letters and the UHN logo for identification. Internally illuminated letters hung from a canopy are used to identify Emergency Departments at both hospitals. Hospital staffers have heard appreciative comments from visitors regarding the new signage. Staff members are grateful for the ability to update interior signs quickly and inexpensively due to the use of separate panels for each location.
