Back to School Special As summer turns to fall, we 're gearing up for the school season by putting the finishing touches on wayfinding programs for clients including HACC, Central Pennsylvania's Community College in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, Indiana Wesleyan University in Marion, Indiana, Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana, and Triton College in River Grove, Illinois. Meanwhile, our work for Penn State continues to earn high marks, as noted below. As for field trips, President Mark VanderKlipp gave a presentation Sept. 13 to the International Downtown Association's annual conference, in Calgary, Alberta, while Marketing Director Shelley Steele staffed an exhibitor's booth. Shelley was also on hand for the annual Healthcare Symposium & Expo held Sept. 9-11 in Chicago. On Sept. 25, Mark made a presentation to the Northwest Michigan Council of Governments. And on Nov. 8-11, Shelley will attend the HEALTHCARE DESIGN 08 conference in Washington, D.C. Look for her there at Booth 212. |

![]() Thinking Outside The Box Hospital signage uses curves, perforated sides to soften appearance, stand out in environment Scripps Health is a non-profit, community-based health care delivery network in the San Diego area that includes four acute-care hospitals on five campuses, 10 clinic locations, more than 2,600 affiliated physicians, and more than 11,000 employees. Corbin Design has developed interior, exterior and parking signage standards for multiple Scripps Health facilities since 2006. The first of those systems was recently installed at Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla, and similar systems are now being installed at Scripps facilities in Carlsbad, EastLake and Rancho Bernardo. Major construction projects spurred the healthcare delivery network to seek a coordinated signage system, to better convey the Scripps identity and present a more unified appearance to the public. The system design eschews traditional sign design in favor of curved tops and bottoms. Perforated metal sides on illuminated signs let light spill out from the sides, helping them stand out. The main identifier sign shown above was fabricated and installed by Fluoresco Lighting & Signs, which has offices in California, Arizona and Nevada. Parking signage was fabricated by Nordquist Sign Company of Minneapolis and installed by Pacific Building Group of San Diego. |
Top Of The Class Corbin Design has developed wayfinding systems for Penn State campuses and buildings since 1998. The most recent result of that partnership can be seen at Penn State Erie, The Behrend College, where a new exterior signage system was recently installed. The system of vehicular and pedestrian guide, maps and identification signs was fabricated and installed by Howard Industries of Fairview, Pennsylvania. It follows the standards that Corbin developed for the main campus in State College, while adding custom sign types like the shield-shaped campus identifier pictured above. |
