The Children's Center of Detroit
The Children’s Center has a unique caregiving philosophy: treating physical, behavioral and mental health in one spot. Their mission makes them an oasis of care for Detroit’s most compromised children and families.
Corbin Design was asked to help people find this oasis, since the Center has facilities spread throughout Midtown Detroit. Their main campus, located adjacent to a primary arterial roadway (Woodward Ave.), needed to be more easily identified by families using public transit or private cars to come for care. A future light rail line will bring more transit traffic to campus. The bright blue and yellow logo appears in a brick plaza at the intersection with Woodward, creating a gateway experience.
Once turned toward campus, guide signs direct visitors to each facility, which are identified only by the building’s address. This information is shared before arrival, and directs visitors as they enter a secured parking area. Fencing throughout campus ensures security and shields construction, but can also seem unwelcoming; we designed large format graphic panels to reduce the fencing’s visual impact and carry the brand. Other Center facilities are integrated within the Detroit Medical Center campus nearby.
Pedestrian guide signs direct to services housed in each building. The signs create a pattern of helpful information for an institution designed to help those most in need.
The signage system was designed to address the current campus environment, and to change as the campus master plan is implemented over the course of decades. Because the Children’s Center is a non-profit entity, long range planning is required to account for inevitable shifts in funding levels.
