Penn State Hershey Children’s Hospital

Hershey, PA

Having developed a wayfinding master plan and signage standards for Penn State Hershey, Corbin Design has been implementing wayfinding programs for their new buildings as well.

Penn State Hershey Children’s Hospital includes 72 private beds and a pediatric operating room suite that serves the entire medical center. The consultative team included Payette Architects, Boston, with whom we worked closely to incorporate wayfinding logic and signage.

Each public building on this campus has a designated color. Here, the orange is a secondary reminder of one’s location in the Children’s Hospital, provides consistency throughout the building, and serves as a visual target for wayfinding information.

The wayfinding signage was thoughtfully designed for both patients/families and facility staff. It incorporates landmark images, simplified information and donor recognition appropriate to the context of the environment. At the same time, the information can quickly adapt to changes using printed inserts. Fabricated by Bright Sign & Maintenance using a standard APCO frame system, the sign information is maintained by the in-house sign shop via an online ordering system.

Close collaboration between the client, architect and Corbin Design resulted in a solution that uses all aspects of the built environment to provide direction, and appeal to young patients and families.
