As a part of Sault Ste. Marie's comprehensive streetscape project, Corbin Design created a signage and wayfinding system that celebrates the city's nautical heritage and industrial economic base.
Marine blue and brown are a natural palette for the signage that incorporates the image of a cargo ship, the city's symbol. The buoy-like shape of several sign types further reflects the nautical theme.
The sign elements were integrated with new pedestrian shelters and crosswalks, bringing a cohesive, consistent look to the downtown. Illuminated signs at crosswalks are particularly useful during the region's long dark winters.
A large, outdoor retail directory promotes downtown businesses, and a pedestrian map designed by Corbin shows the locations of retail outlets and public destinations. Ink-jet printing on permanent materials allows cost-effective annual updating.
