The wayfinding program for downtown Kalamazoo defines
six "neighborhoods" within the downtown area
and directs people to a specific neighborhood before pointing them
to specific destinations.
A symbol was designed and a
color assigned for each neighborhood. Symbol characters and sign designs
are based on an art deco aesthetic to reflect the city's architecture.
The wayfinding system includes
trailblazers leading visitors downtown Kalamazoo
from outlying areas, cultural luminaires to provide cultural and historical
information, vehicular and pedestrian directional signs and pedestrian
maps.
