Since its opening in 1959, JANAF Shopping Center has a long history as the Norfolk region's oldest and most recognizable shopping center. Its 93 acres and nearly
1 million square feet of retail space house restaurants, national and specialty stores, a post office and banks.
Corbin Design was commissioned to develop exterior wayfinding for the center, and redesign entrance identification signs to match the new system. The goal was to develop a unified wayfinding system that gives the user the feeling of being in a close community while supporting JANAF's “Park at the Door of your Favorite Store” marketing campaign.
A visually unified set of sign types—including banners to identify regions within the larger shopping center—give it a strong identity and reflect the shopping center's history (JANAF, an acronym for Joint Army Navy Air Force, represents the center's original investment group that was composed of retired and active duty military personnel).
